If you’re moving to Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Durham, or are new to the area, then chances are that you’ve already heard about Research Triangle Park. But what is Research Triangle Park (RTP) and what does it bring to the community?
The word park usually evokes images of green, wide open spaces and walkways; while Research Triangle Park has that it’s also so much more.
Research Triangle Park was created in an effort to keep and entice tech companies, scientists, and engineers to move to North Carolina. Research Triangle Park is 7,000-acres dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and math (also known as STEM). It’s two miles wide and eight miles long and is based in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill; these three cities make up the “Triangle.” It now has an extension spilling into Wake County toward Cary and Morrisville, according to Discover Durham.
Research Triangle Park brings countless opportunities to not just the cities that it resides in, but North Carolina in its entirety.
What is Research Triangle Park? Opportunity!
To date over 250 businesses have decided to call Triangle Park home since it broke ground in 1959. The location was ideal as it’s a stone’s throw away from Duke, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill). Graduates from these top universities don’t need to go far in order to find employment.
Research Triangle Park is the largest research park in the country and currently employs over 50k people. The Triangle is also one of the smartest areas in the country with over 50% of the population having a bachelor’s degree.
The Triangle encourages companies of all sizes to set up shop, from start-ups to established businesses. Companies can lease a building, or rent a floor, or buy a plot of land and build their ideal space.
Did you know that over 3,000 patents have been awarded to Research Triangle Park businesses? Additionally, RTP minds have created everything from the UPC barcode to life-saving HIV drugs.
The goal of the Triangle is to foster growth, bold ideas, and innovation. According to the RTP wbsite: “Here, independent entrepreneurs, artists, and researchers can work alongside those who work at major corporations and research universities.”
RTP believes that diverse communities and teams can help create new, innovative ideas; they, “…create innovative approaches to solving the world’s toughest problems.”
If you’re a small company looking for a place to call home then perhaps The Lab is the ideal place for you. The Lab is a flexible, full-service office space to help you become the next world-changing innovator.
Work, Life, and Play Balance
While work is important, Research Triangle Park believes that if you work hard you should play hard too. Triangle Park has a number of parks and trails for when the offices get to be a bit too stuffy.
They have over 4 miles of natural surface trails available for mountain biking and hiking—although I don’t suggest that you go before your big meeting. In total there are 13 trails around RTP and the Triangle boasts over 100 miles of paved greenway trails
If you bring your furry children, there are dog parks for them to frolic and play in and a dogsitting service is available for when you need to get to work. The Triangle is home to more than 250 parks, so you’ll have no problem finding that perfect picnic spot.
There are 4 softball fields and 6 volleyball courts so gather up your coworkers and enjoy the sunshine. Take a mental break and recharge before tackling the rest of your workday.
Boating and fishing fans can enjoy the serene waters of Falls Lake, Harris Lake, Lake Wheeler, and Jordan Lake, which combined amounts to more than 27,000 acres of water. Golfers have an incredible selection of local courses with 30 public and 18 private golf courses, according to Work In The Triangle.
Nestled among the chrome and steel buildings there are plenty of green spaces for you to explore on your break or on your days off. They integrate parks with plenty of benches, terraces, and water features, interspersed with picnic tables, hammocks, and even games so there’s no shortage of things for you to do or discover.
