The city of Raleigh has a lot going for it, from museums and art galleries to the world’s largest Beer Garden and exciting downtown nightlife.
The Raleigh-Durham area is also part of The Triangle, home to numerous tech companies and research facilities that attract an educated workforce that help serve as a major lure for businesses in the region.
The Triangle is anchored by the major research universities of North Carolina State University, Duke University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and that’s a key reason why Raleigh is such a successful and thriving city. Education has truly helped make Raleigh the city it is today.
With so many first-rate universities in the region, Raleigh has an energetic, innovative community and economy. And it’s why Raleigh ranks so high when it comes to public schools.
How Does Raleigh Rank for Education?
There are more than 189,000 people enrolled in higher education in the Raleigh-Durham area, and the region produces more than 53,000 graduates each year. That means The Triangle is one of the most educated communities in the U.S. Raleigh often ranks among the best places in the nation for business and careers, thanks to that young, highly educated labor force. The entire Triangle region is home to 18 colleges, universities, and community colleges.
When WalletHub ranked cities to see which ones were the most educated in the U.S., Ann Arbor, Michigan came in first, followed by Raleigh in second place.
Forbes magazine has also ranked Raleigh as being among the most highly educated, noting that local universities — the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University and Duke in particular – turn out an educated workforce and that 43% of the region’s population has a bachelor’s degree. Raleigh’s neighboring city, Durham, came in third on the list.
Raleigh also made Forbes’ list of America’s 20 Best Cities for Young Professionals in 2016. Recent college graduates have an easier time finding jobs than in other cities, Forbes noted. At the same time, the cost of living in Raleigh remains affordable, and the price of homes here hasn’t soared to the sky-high levels seen in cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, New York City and San Francisco.
And Raleigh was cited last year for several other academic accomplishments, including:
- Being home to NCSU, a Top School for Entrepreneurship Studies for 2019
- Being one of Eight of America’s Most Digitally Inclusive Tech Cities
- Being ranked as the No. 1 city for schools in the United States by the website GreatSchools.Org.
In fact, Raleigh is renowned for having one of the best education systems in the nation, and that’s likely one of the top reasons — along with the strong economy and affordable housing market — why families relocate here.
What About Raleigh’s Local School System?
Raleigh has 73 schools, including the highly rated Wake Early College of Health and Sciences. The city’s schools are known for offering world-class educational opportunities for children.
The schools in the Wake County Public School System earn high marks across the board and often outperform school districts across the state and nation in proficiency tests and SAT scores.
Raleigh is home to public, private and charter schools, including some with a diverse curriculum and a semi-international student body. There are plenty of preschools available throughout the city for children between the ages of 18 months to 5 years old.
The bottom line: highly ranked schools help the entire city, including boosting the economy and home values. And in Raleigh, great schools have helped make this city what it is today.
